a short hello from deep in the hinterland...

what does hinterland mean anyway?
I've been on the road, meeting farmers, cows, deer, chickens, dogs, goats and pigs.
I've been seeing how the land lies, checking out the neck of the woods, kicking the turf,
rolling grapes round my tongue, having a tea, a shortbread, a chat, a long ramble out the back forty by foot or by truck. I've been scanning the horizon, seeing the clouds roll in and roll out, talking land prices, arable uses, post-industrial farming, tractors, and how to catch a runaway pig.
I'm loving it. Loving. It.

I'll check in later on in the week - your girl out in the field - your field correspondent.

This really does sound great...and I'm not even an animal person. Imagining you out in the open, the fresh air, sky, scenes, and (some of) the smells has me intrigued. Looking forward to a full report.

Your pictures reminded me of James Herriot- in the best possible way.
Keep having fun, Jan.

Mason - it is so enlightening to be talking to farmers. And in the zeigeist - where our food comes from.

Liza - oh it is heavenly. I am a country gal at heart.

Natasha - I take that as a real compliment. I adore James Herriot!

Hart - it is, it continues to be and I'm planning on how I can keep walking into people's houses and farms and lives with impunity or without impunity or whatever that phrase is because it is way fun.

Goo - aren't they too funny. the one looks like it is leading a parade and a choir!

Brenda - the weather was great today AND I forgot my wellies until it was too late but I avoided all large smelly tam o'shanters!

Love the piggies! And now I crave fresh, locally produced carrots. Any of ours would be solid frozen by now, though :(

I cant wait for the follow up - perhaps a tutorial on how to catch that run away pig?

I'd be enthralled, sort of armchair farming in a way...
