wonderful day out the bay...

Life goes on apace no matter what you do or think you're doing. It gallups through summer and onto the fall.  Despite the fact that I live with two, soon three teenagers, I am willing summer to last to its fullness - that would be at least until Sept.21st and on if the weather is as it has been. So I ignore the 'back to school' flurry of advertisements - the bid from the material world to welcome each turn of the season with a spending frenzy and instead have managed to remember how I count my summer. I do it in the number of times I get out on or in the water.

Friday I went into Risser's Beach with my friend Carolyn. Risser's is down the South Shore - it has the most exquisite boardwalk..
Well, she stayed on the beach and I went into the chuck. In my underwears.
I didn't know we'd end up at the glorious place and besides - I defy anyone to tell me that my underwear is less worthy of swimming than some dumb old suit from Winners!

Yesterday being Saturday and being hot I found myself after the step-dot and I had been to the new absolutely not-improved market and the house being tidy enough for a visit from Ron's wonderful brother, Richard - I took myself down the hill and over to a little rock beach along the road. I walked there - it took about four and a half minutes. Here is the weird thing - in 8 years I have never tried swimming there! I cannot believe it - think I just got used to the bad old days in Halifax where you wouldn't dream of swimming near homes....euuuuh. But there has never been that reason out here. People - it was glorious! The water was a good temperature, it was easy to get in and I swam around for ages with no one but a few cormorants looking on. Even all the folks whizzing by in their vehicles couldn't really see me over the rose bushes on the side of the road. HEAVEN.
Sweet-pea was off to White Point resort with her girlfriends and one mother for two days of bliss. The step-boy was asleep and judging from the midnight house roaming he did would stay asleep for awhile. So, sweet patootie and I went out the bay in the canoe. It was ' flat ass cam' as we set out. We hadn't gotten too far when SP said 'whales! I can hear them blowing!' but it wasn't whales. It was porpoises - three of them and we hung around them for about half an hour.
Me trying to get pics - I got a couple out of the fifty I took because the DAMN little point and shoot takes pics a nidge past when you take them which is tough enough when trying to get whales in view but impossible with porpoises. But never mind - it was wonderful wonderful wonderful. Nothing is as sweet as seeing their beautiful forms curve out of the water and in again. We figured out that they were trying to lure us away from the fish as they would lead us out a bit and then double-back to the same spot. We finally left them but at one point they were no more than five feet away.

We headed out to Rogue's Roost where I swam off our little island (I named it Coffee Island today) and Ron roamed around a bit by himself in the canoe. Then we had coffee and some lunch and I read.
After that we scooted over to Hern Island where there were thirteen kayaks ashore on the beach plus some motor boat families with little sand castle building kids. I swam again and we sat listening to the conversations and then finally went on our way home.
Yep. That's a summer!

Thanks for the lovely description of your summer day - and the great pictures. I love reading your blog, but I really love seeing your life pictorialized!

Oh, what a magical day! I didn't realize porpoises liked it that far north! Love, too, that swim wear was not necessary, because that's sort of how I roll...

Stopping by for Karen's BBQ with some fried chicken and pop. Nice to meet you. I love summer too and technically, we still have 2 and a half weeks left! Looks like a great time. I like making sand castles too.
